Who we are.

Organization Mission

Our mission of the Hmong Community Center, Inc. is to serve, inform and educate the Southeast Asian community of the changes that will affect: cultural heritage, education, training, direct services, advocacy and strengthen the ability to advocate for community.

Background and History
The Hmong Community Center, Inc (formerly known as the Lakeshore Indochinese Mutual Assistance Association-LIMAA) was established as a non-profit organization under the INS 501 (C) (3) tax-exempt status in 1989 to assist the refugee community in Manitowoc County with job, housing, family issues, and assist them to become self-sufficient and productive and contributing members of the community.

The governing body of the organization consists of 9 board members which meet 8-10 time per year. Currently, the Hmong Community Center has 5 staff. 2 full-time and 4 part-time.

The organization is part of a Multi-consortium with a monthly meeting over 25 local service providers to discuss matters and share information related to the minority and the needs of the community at large.

In 2002, HCC bought its own building.

Accomplishments

Sponsored the Manitowoc/Two Rivers Annual Hmong Festival Celebration, which was attended by more than 4,000 people and host the Appreciation Dinner for volunteers, agencies, and businesses for their efforts in assisting the Hmong community.

Purchased the Hmong Community Center building to increase the organization’s stability and its mission.
Received a grant to purchase the Hmong Community Center building
Organized and collects used clothes, furniture, and other items for the new refugee/low income families 2004 to present
Of the 35 new refugee families, assisted 24 individual to obtain employment
Conducted 18 presentations and workshops on: youth, family issues, housing, Hmong cultures, legal issues, education, citizenship, and employment
Provided Driver Education class to 48 people, 42 passed the permit test, and 19 got their driver licenses
HCC were able to help 16 youth increased their school attendance, 26 youth increased their GPA, helped 17 youth prevent recidivism, and helped 9 youth obtained employment
Assisted 150 refugees to obtain their U.S. citizenship status
Bridging 17 youth ages 12-14 to continue joining the Goalgetters United Soccer Club for the passed 3 years which have never been done before.
2005 Co-coordinated with the Foods Network Securities, Inc. to contract with Manitowoc County to provide a 26 acres land for community garden to all local residents (Hmong, Hispanic, Anglo, etc)
Send 7 new refugees to a joined Woodshop course with Sheboygan HMAA
2002 start a youth soccer program.
